Vehicle Import VAT FAQs
Do I pay VAT and VRT on the same vehicle?
Yes, both are separate taxes. VAT is paid on your actual costs (purchase + transport + duty), while VRT is based on the Irish market value. Both must be paid before registration.
Can I claim back VAT paid on vehicle imports?
If you're VAT registered for business purposes, you may be able to claim back VAT on commercial vehicles. Private individuals cannot claim back VAT on personal vehicle imports.
What if I paid VAT in the UK before Brexit?
UK VAT paid after Brexit doesn't count toward Irish VAT obligations. You'll still need to pay full Irish VAT plus customs duty on UK imports.
Is VAT calculated on the OMSP or purchase price?
VAT is calculated on your actual purchase price plus transport and duties - not the OMSP. VRT is calculated on the OMSP. This means you might pay VAT and VRT on different amounts.
What happens if I don't pay VAT on time?
The vehicle will be held at customs until VAT is paid. Interest and penalties accrue daily, making delays expensive. You cannot register or use the vehicle until all taxes are paid.
