Our Mission: Clarity and Accuracy for Irish Motorists
Navigating Vehicle Registration Tax can be complex. We built this tool to provide a free, accurate, and easy-to-use resource for everyone importing a vehicle into Ireland.
Our Mission
We provide accurate and up-to-date VRT calculations to help individuals and businesses understand the true cost of importing vehicles to Ireland. Our calculator uses the latest Revenue rates and regulations, updated within 48 hours of any official change.
Whether you are importing a single car for personal use or running a dealership bringing in multiple vehicles per month, our tools are designed to give you reliable estimates you can trust. We believe that transparent pricing leads to better decisions, and we are committed to being the most dependable source of VRT information available online.
Our Vision
We believe that understanding vehicle taxes should not be a daunting task. We created this platform to empower users with the tools and information they need to make informed decisions.
Our long-term vision is to become Ireland's most comprehensive vehicle import resource, covering not just VRT but all associated costs including VAT, customs duty, NOx levies, and vehicle testing fees. We want every importer to walk into their VRT appointment knowing exactly what to expect, with no surprises and no hidden costs.
Why We Built This Calculator
This VRT calculator was born from a simple frustration: the difficulty in getting a quick, reliable VRT estimate. As automotive enthusiasts and data experts, we saw a need for a modern, comprehensive tool that uses the latest official rates from Revenue.ie and explains the complex calculations in simple terms.
Before we built this platform, getting a VRT estimate meant either using Revenue's own calculator (which requires a statistical code you only get after purchasing a vehicle) or relying on forum posts and word of mouth. Neither option was satisfactory for someone trying to budget before making a purchase decision. We wanted to change that by building a tool that works before you buy, not after.
We are independent and not affiliated with any government body or car dealership. Our only incentive is to provide accurate, trustworthy information that helps our users save money and avoid costly surprises.
Our goal is to empower you with the information you need to make informed decisions, saving you time and potential surprises when registering your vehicle.
Meet Our Core Team
Our content and calculations are researched, developed, and overseen by a team of specialists who follow changes in Irish and EU tax law closely. We are dedicated to providing the most accurate information possible.
Sarah Murphy
Lead VRT Analyst & Researcher
With over 12 years of experience in automotive data analysis, Sarah is responsible for interpreting Revenue's VRT manuals and ensuring our calculation logic is precise and up-to-date. Her expertise lies in tracking changes to OMSP valuation trends and tax legislation.
"One of the biggest misconceptions about VRT is that it's based on your purchase price. In reality, Revenue determines the Open Market Selling Price based on Irish market values, which can be very different. Our calculator helps you estimate what Revenue might assess your vehicle at, so you're not caught off guard."
Sarah Murphy, Lead VRT Analyst
David Kelly
Emissions Standards Expert (WLTP/NEDC)
David specializes in EU vehicle emissions standards. He ensures the accurate application of CO₂ and NOx rates, including the complex conversions between NEDC and WLTP values. He has contributed to several industry publications on vehicle emissions.
"The shift from NEDC to WLTP emissions testing has had a big impact on VRT calculations. WLTP figures are typically 15-25% higher than NEDC, which can push vehicles into higher VRT bands. Always check which standard applies to your vehicle - it can make a difference of thousands of euros."
David Kelly, Emissions Standards Expert
Liam O'Connell
EV & Hybrid Specialist
Liam focuses exclusively on the VRT rules for electric and hybrid vehicles. He monitors changes to EV reliefs, tapering mechanisms, and specific rules for plug-in hybrids, ensuring our calculator provides the most accurate estimates for low-emission vehicles.
"Electric vehicle relief can save importers up to €5,000, but many people don't realise that only Battery Electric Vehicles qualify - not plug-in hybrids. With the relief scheme confirmed through 2026, now is an excellent time to consider an EV for your next import."
Liam O'Connell, EV & Hybrid Specialist
Our Commitment to Accuracy
1. Official Sources: All our rates, bands, and formulas are based on the public documentation provided by the Irish Revenue Commissioners. We do not guess or estimate — every number in our calculator is traceable back to an official source.
2. Regular Updates: We monitor budget announcements and Revenue updates to implement changes as quickly as possible. The 'last updated' date is always visible on our sources page. When the Minister for Finance announces VRT changes in the annual budget, we update our systems within 48 hours.
3. Transparency: Our Methodology page provides a clear breakdown of how the calculations are performed, so you can understand the process and verify the logic yourself.
4. Independent Verification: Our calculations are cross-checked against Revenue's own VRT calculator and real-world registration data to ensure consistency. If discrepancies are found, we investigate and correct them immediately.
Understanding Irish VRT
Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) is a one-time tax payable when registering a vehicle in Ireland for the first time. The amount depends on several factors including CO2 emissions, engine size, fuel type, and vehicle age.
VRT is calculated on the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) — what Revenue believes your vehicle would sell for in the Irish market — not on what you actually paid for it. This is one of the most common misunderstandings among importers, and it is why our calculator asks for vehicle details rather than just a purchase price.
The VRT rate itself is determined primarily by CO2 emissions, with rates ranging from 7% for low-emission vehicles up to 41% for high-emission vehicles. Additional charges like the NOx levy can add several thousand euro to the total cost, particularly for diesel vehicles.
Our Comprehensive Toolset
What started as a simple VRT calculator has grown into a full suite of import planning tools. We now offer dedicated calculators for age depreciation, mileage depreciation, condition assessment, NOx levy estimation, and total import cost breakdown.
Each tool is designed to address a specific part of the import process. Our age depreciation calculator helps you understand how a vehicle's age affects its taxable value. Our mileage depreciation calculator shows how high mileage can reduce your VRT bill. Our condition assessment tool helps you document damage that might justify a lower OMSP.
Together, these tools give you a complete picture of your potential costs before you commit to a purchase. We are continuously expanding our toolset based on user feedback and changes to Irish import regulations.
