Why CUPRA is Popular in Ireland

CUPRA is the performance sub-brand from Seat, and it's grown quickly in Ireland. The Formentor in particular has found an audience here. If you're thinking of importing one, remember that VRT is assessed on the Irish OMSP, not the price you paid abroad — and with CUPRA's performance focus, CO2 emissions tend to be on the higher side, which puts them in the higher VRT bands.

CUPRA VRT Bands in Ireland

Irish VRT works on a CO2 percentage system — lower emissions mean a lower rate. The 2026 bands run from 7% at the cleanest end up to 41% for the highest emitters. Here's the full breakdown: 0-50g/km is 7%, 51-80g/km is 9%, 81-85g/km is 9.75%, 86-90g/km is 10.5%, 91-95g/km is 11.25%, 96-100g/km is 12%, 101-105g/km is 12.75%, 106-110g/km is 13.5%, 111-115g/km is 15.25%, 116-120g/km is 16%, 121-125g/km is 16.75%, 126-130g/km is 17.5%, 131-135g/km is 19.25%, 136-140g/km is 20%, 141-145g/km is 21.5%, 146-150g/km is 25%, 151-155g/km is 27.5%, 156-170g/km is 30%, 171-190g/km is 35%, and anything at 191g/km or above hits the maximum 41%.

Electric CUPRA models qualify for up to €5,000 VRT relief, tapering to zero at €50,000 OMSP. The plug-in hybrid relief that was available before ended on 31 December 2021.

CUPRA's performance models tend to have higher CO2 outputs than the average family car. If you're looking at a high-performance variant, check the emissions carefully — those extra grams can push you into a much higher VRT band.

Importing a CUPRA to Ireland

Bringing in a CUPRA from the UK or EU means following the standard import process: any applicable customs duty, Irish VAT at 23%, then a trip to the Revenue VRT office with your registration document, proof of purchase, Certificate of Conformity, and NOx emissions data. Revenue sets the OMSP and applies the CO2-based rate. The process generally takes two to four weeks.

From a VRT perspective, lower-CO2 and electric CUPRA models make more sense. High-performance variants above 190g/km hit the 41% band, and on a performance car that can add serious money to the overall cost.

CUPRA VRT FAQs

How is VRT calculated on a CUPRA imported to Ireland?

It uses the standard CO2-based system for all Irish imports. Revenue looks at the OMSP, applies age-related depreciation (10% at 1-2 years up to 50% over 5 years), then hits you with the CO2-band percentage rate. Electric CUPRAs qualify for up to €5,000 VRT relief. The plug-in hybrid relief that existed before ended on 31 December 2021.

Which CUPRA model has the lowest VRT?

Electric CUPRA models get the best deal here, with up to €5,000 VRT relief available. For petrol variants, it all comes down to the CO2 number — lower is always cheaper. Always check the official WLTP figure for the exact car you're looking at.

Does importing a CUPRA save money?

Importing can save versus Irish forecourt prices, but you must add VRT, any customs duty, and 23% VAT. Compare the total landed cost before committing.
